Integrity. Grace. Movement. Unusual qualities for a stone perhaps, but these are the essential qualities of good stonework. Nothing expresses these mysterious qualities like a well-built wall. The way the stones work together, how the wall engages the landscape, the feelings it imparts are all elements of what you experience and how we build walls.

Seven feet tall and over ninety feet long, this drystone retaining wall holds back a steep bank alongside a winding road in Montreat, North Carolina. Built primarily of a gray Maggie Valley fieldstone, the brown and orange highlights are quarried Hooper’s Creek stone. A good wall is rhythmic; stone size, shape and color should flow throughout the entire structure.

Drystone retaining walls help to contain the exuberance of a springtime garden. Built of Daggitt Mountain stone, the walls are low enough to encourage people to sit and linger in the space. There are several variants of this type of stone available in the Asheville area. This particular stone has a grain similar to granite and lovely black and white crystal maps.

Gray Maggie Valley stone is set off dramatically by vibrant flowers that tumble over the wall like water. The tan highlights in this drystone wall are a Virgnia sandstone.

This drystone retaining wall is built exclusively of Virginia sandstone. A sedimentary rock, most sandstone variants are fairly square and quite soft, making them easy to work. Splitting open a chunk of sandstone is always an adventure; bland exteriors reveal the most amazing array of mineral colors.

Variation in the stone size and color draw the eye to this low retaining wall of Hooper’s Creek quarry stone.

This stone veneer is primarialy built of Daggitt Mountain stone. The wall highlights the organic shapes and stark textures of the stone. We backset our mortar to mimic the clean aesthetic of a drystone wall.
