Stone Project Designs

Sometimes we just make sketches of things we’d like to build. These are some of our random stone project designs.

A Fire Pit

superman doomsday online
a fire pit designA single stone comprises the entire hearth in this fire pit design. The cut away for the fire mimics the outside shape of the hearthstone. The supporting stone walls could be dry laid or mortared depending on other design elements and preferences. The shape of the hearth stone is a key element to a successful execution of the design. The paving stone should be similar if not the same as the hearthstone, to give the sense that the fire pit sort of grew right out of the ground.

aerial view of the fire pit designThis is an aerial view of the same idea. The fire opening is centered and very symmetric. An off-center opening might allow for seating near the fire. Placement of the fire pit in the larger space would certainly influence that choice.

Mahoney’s Sea Wall

mahoney's sea wallThis is a boulder wall designed for a friend who was seeking an economical way to deal with screening and protecting a small frontyard from a bustling road. This is only economical because John happens to be a sculptor. He does naturalistic animal forms in recycled steel, which I would like to have swimming over a rocky sea floor made of 1-3 ton boulders deeply anchored in the ground. These will serve as a guard rail. The boulders should be staggered creating small planting pockets, to give the sea floor spring time color. The sculptures should span across two or more boulders, to draw the eye along the piece and away from the house.

Roadside Boulder Wall

boulder wall design for along a roadThis is another treatment for alongside a busy road, though this type of wall could be used in a lot of situations. The boulders act almost as pivot points in the wall, allowing it to change direction as desired, creating planting pockets and visual interest. In this sketch, large rhododendrons hover behind the wall, screening the house and yard. I imagine building one section of wall as an arch. This should be built dry, without mortar.
