Steps

The durability and stability of stone make it a natural choice for steps and staircases. And yet, stone is suprisingly flexible for step-building. We have built formal and orderly entranceways into homes and businesses. We have also created organic and playful stone steps that twist through gardens or towards a favorite wooded hideout.

Stone steps make a dramatic entrance to an Asheville home. This trio of steps is built with Daggitt Mountain risers and Hooper’s Creek treads that match the stones used in the walkway. The steps are mortared and rest on a concrete pad to ensure they do not settle.

This set of drystone steps emerges from a retaining wall, built to increase a growing family’s backyard. The staircase is integrated directly into the wall, locking it securely in place. The steps and wall are built of Virginia sandstone. Dogs installed separately.

This rustic set of steps leads through a riotous garden and into a private backyard. In most case, each step is made up of a single stone of Daggitt Mountain.

 

This dramatic drystone entrance leads through an Asian influenced garden towards an exclusive spa. The treads are cut from thick slabs of blue-gray Tennessee Crab Orchard. The risers and the surrounding wall are built of Virginia sandstone. Only the very top stepstones are bedded in mortar. The rest of the steps are built beneath each other and into the side walls, ensuring they’ll remain locked in place. The number of tread stones is staggered 3-2-3-2 to give the staircase a sense of visual balance
