Fire

Fire and stone are elemental forces. Stone is grown at the fiery core of the earth. Fire is restrained and contained by stone. For millennia humankind has used stone, in simple rings and in elaborate fireplaces, to harness fire.

A small fire burns in a retained heat masonry oven. The lintel stones are of limestone reclaimed from an old cabin foundation.

This 42 inch Rumford fireplace is the main feature on the interior of the stone cabin we’re building along the ridge of the Black Mountains. Rumford fireplaces are more shallow than typical fireboxes and are renowned for burning very efficiently and radiating more heat into the living space.

Stone flames rise above this fireplace on an outdoor patio. The hearth is built large enough to serve as a bench, for warming up on crisp fall evenings.

Two large slabs of blue crab orchard stone frame a outdoor fire pit. Incorporated into a drystone retaining wall alongside a patio, there isn’t a drop of mortar in this fire pit.
