Cabin Panoramic
I stand precariously on a boulder on the opposite side of the meadow, hopefully in the same spot, trying to frame the shot the same as the time before. Slowly the cabin grows out of the rich earth.

At long last the rafters are all up. The arch form for the gable window is in place.
13 August 2008
All the rafters are up, but not all are in place in this picture. Sliding the assembled rafters along the sill plate proved to be easier than trying to build them each in place.
7 August 2008
Three rafters in place, including one to the front that shows the shape and scale of the full structure.
4 August 2008
Three sides done, with only the front of the cabin to finish. The arched window is done and the form has been removed. There’s a lintel over the front door. The gin pole has come down, after setting the keystone for the arch.
24 July 2008
An arched form is in place for the front window and the doorway is almost up to height. Chimney is completed, except for a cap.
11 June 2008
At long last, the first rafter is in place and full scale of the structure is visible. Really, it’s small, but in an immense kind of way.
22 May 2008
We have started crossing the lintels and are up to sill height towards the back of the cabin on both sides. The cables that cut through the view are rigged to stabilize the gin pole.

Whoops. Kind of a long gap. We shut down for the long winter shortly after the last image was taken, resuming in late April. The most noticeable difference would be the new lintels. The first ones we set were cut from Elberton granite and resembled curbstones. In the intervening months, our local stoneyard starting stocking old granite from South Carolina. The rough shapes fit the cabin’s look perfectly.

Fall is rising around us. There are six window bucks up now, two that are topped out and the rough opening for the door is in place.
4 September 2007
Both of the batter boards for the north side of the cabin are now visible, as are two window bucks along the south side.
27 August 2007
One of the batter boards for the north side of the cabin is now visible.
24 August 2007
The first wall just starts peaking over the hillside.
16 August 2007
The batter boards give the first real scale to the wall and the space they will contain.
15 August 2007
Ursula peeks into the frame at the bottom left. She is loaded with lumber for the batter boards.

Work continues in the ‘pit’ on the front and far foundation walls.
30 July 2007
Everyone’s in the pit building foundation walls.
18 July 2007
On days like this, I feel like I’m working at the edge of the sea.
10 July 2007
With the foundation dug, we tamp gravel into the area where the footer walls will rest.
18 June 2007
The laser level helps us lay out the corners for the digging the foundation hole.
