Jeremy's wall finished

jeremy's wall panorama

We finished Jeremy’s wall today. It has already withstood a small flood, when the gully filled with runoff during a thunderstorm. The wall did exactly what we’d hope it would do in such a situation- nothing.

Some regrading and landscaping is in order, but by spring, the yard will be fully recovered from the stream relocation and wall project.

This is the first entry in the new version of our site. Visit often, as we will be updating more frequently now that the site is up. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to pulling the site together.

Happy thanksgiving!

Jeremy's Stile

drystone stile

Further research has revealed that a stile (singular) is a set of steps. Stiles (plural) would be more than one set of steps. Think turnstile. So- Jeremy’s stile is done, though the wall isn’t quite finished. We’ve been running buckets of gravels down the stile and it’s steady and comfortble walking. At times stiles were mandatory in the English countryside, prompting passive-aggressive landowners to make them deliberately difficult to navigate.

Waynes' Wall

drystone wall

For the last few weeks we have been working on a Waynesville mountaintop hideaway, building drystone retaining walls like the one above and steps. In order to avoid resting thirty tons of stone and backfill on a gas line, the originally planned wall, a scant four feet tall, had to be moved further from the house. It now stands seven feet tall and will get taller before it’s done. We’re using Maggie Valley fieldstone and backfilling with 3/4″ washed gravel.

drystone steps

Steps grow out of retaining walls that will become planting beds. Landings on the staircase are integrated into the walls and provide the gardener access to the beds.
